This is the season that Will and I really appreciate living in a more rural community.
We are fortunate in that we are surrounded with bountiful family farms, some of which have been passed on through many generations and offer a wide variety of fresh vegetables, fruit, flowers and of course a well spent day talking to the girls about planting, growing your own food and eating healthy and locally.
The first weekend of October we visited the Shlagel Farm, which was originally started by the current owners Grandfather who was straight of the boat from Ellis Island. The original farm was 500 acres, and the original 500 are still being farmed; quite amazing really.
It was a fabulous weekend, the weather was crisp but still warm, and fall was everywhere. We took a very educational tractor / hay ride to the pumpkin patch, picked our own pumpkins, went through the hay maze (much better than a crazy corn maze when you are letting your 5 year old lead the way), played in a corn box (equivalent to a sand box but with less mess in the car!) and brought home some beautiful produce.
