Changing of the Guard

I am writing this entry sitting on the recently cleaned front porch of our house. It is finally starting to feel like spring, and with the weather, our enjoyment of Newport has warmed considerably. The last week has been a whirlwind, but life is starting to settle down into a routine. Kate does little else but sleep, poop, and eat (in that order). Knock on wood, she has been sleeping pretty well through the night, except when Shelly eats something that makes her gassy, waking up only once or twice to feed.

I have found what grandfathers are good for: drinking their son's bourbon and being playmates for two-and-a-half year old granddaughter. My father has been great. Since arriving, he has spent his days playing hide-and-seek, planting flowers and tomato plants and taking Madison for long outings around town. He posses time and patience only a great grandfather can have for his grandchildren.

Alas, the time has come for my father to leave tomorrow, but Shelly's mom, Pennie, has arrived to take his place. Shelly and I are equally as grateful for Pennie's arrival, and though she might not drink my bourbon, she is also great with Madison.

. . . Again, I am writing this on the porch talking to Madison, and I am totally amazed at what a little person she has become. I suddenly see myself as my father, looking at my child and her children.
