Nightime Potty Training

The latest adventure with Kate is trying to potty-train her at night. This is more of a business decision than anything. Shelly recently decided she was done spending money diapers.

With Madison, it was pretty easy. We didn't have to limit liquids at night or any other crazy measures. We just made her pee before bed, and then we would get her up to pee right before we went to bed. Except for the time she peed on me, (read 2007 blog), Madison had maybe two accidents in her bed and otherwise she was potty trained. Kate was not, or has not been, that simple.

I first tried to do what we did with Madison: make her go before bed and then get her up as we went to bed. Of course Kate wanted nothing to do with being yanked out out her warm, comfy bed and made to sit on the cold porcelain toilet. As a result, at some random time in the middle of the night, I could count on Kate's wailing to wake me up. Shelly and I would then go through the task of changing Kate, stripping her bed, and starting a load of newly dyed yellow sheets.

This has become a monumental battle for Shelly. After the fourth night of bed wetting the bed, I found Shelly having a various serious talk with BK, "Kate, you need to wake up and go to the potty when you have to go pee at night." Shelly then turned to me and said, "I just don't think she gets it." Of course as I looked at Kate, who proudly, and self-convincingly told me, "Daddy, I didn't wet the bed last night." I looked at Kate, I looked Shelly, and just had to laugh.

****

A week has passed since the above post, and Kate -not to jinx it- has gone three nights with no accidents. I will not mention the strick water rations or the small monetary bribe I pay nightly (my daughters are born capitalists), but it is working.

One night at a time.
