Sisters

There is a special relationship only a few of us experience: the bond experienced by two siblings of the same sex and similar age. Siblings will always love one another. I love my sister just like Shelly loves her brother, and we have a different affection for our sibling than we do for our parents, or children, or spouse. But two sisters, or two brothers, are destine to be more than siblings. Like two people in a prearranged marriage, God destines siblings of the same age and sex to be best friends, fierce competitors, jealous girlfriends, and sole-mates.

Having never experienced it myself, it fascinates me to watch Madison and Kate begin to forge their lifelong bond. The other night, while Shelly and I were cooking dinner, Madison and Kate were cracking as they took turns pushing each other in a cart around the room. Kate and Madison playing hide-and-seek is another classic sibling moment. Each girl takes turns jumping on the other as neither hides more than ten feet from the other. For me, the fact that Madison can actually understand Kate best exemplifies their bond.

Shelly is accusing me of being too mushy, but I write this entry more for Kate and Madison. To tell them they that, no matter how much they might fight or disagree in life, no other relationship they will have will mean as much as the one they have for each other.
