I just read Tony and Shannon's post about meeting Alex Trebek, and it reminded me that I should post (and I do this somewhat begrudgingly) that I am going to have my 30 seconds of fame on Wheel of Fortune, May 16th, when I do an intro (playing off my name of course) for the bonus round to the show. If you are wondering how this happened, it is simple. About 2 months ago, Wheel of Fortune came to base and hosted try outs for Military Appreciation Week on the show. You might think that I, with my fortuitous name, was the first in line to try out, but I withheld, for my dignity cannot be bought for the mere prospect of prize money and being on TV. This said, one of the enlisted sailors from our squadron did try out and was picked. Thus, when the Wheel of Fortune personnel came to HSL-45 to do a promo with the selected Sailor, our Command Master Chief, who was leading them around the squadron, was quick to tell them the squadron also had an officer named after the show. The next thing I know I was standing out front of the squadron reciting some line like, "This is Lieutenant Will Fortune, United States Navy, and we are flying into the bonus round!" Honestly, I hope they don't use it, for soon all of America can think I was named after a stupid game show!
For the record, my father is named William H. Fortune, and it he -not the game show-I am named after!
